I don\u2019t speak it, I can\u2019t read it, and I don\u2019t understand it &#8211; it all seemed so overwhelming at the time.  I honestly didn\u2019t really know what to expect.&nbsp;&nbsp;I just knew that I needed something drastically different to shock my system into a full re-set, so off I went to explore this ultramodern, yet traditional country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something you will learn about me is I do not prefer large cities when traveling, as my preference is always for a small-town vibe, getting off the beaten path and completely immersing myself into the culture.\u00a0\u00a0I still incorporate trips to the larger cities to see the sights, experience the busyness, but usually limit my stays to between 48 to 72 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tokyo, Japan\u2019s capital, is by far the busiest city I have ever experienced.&nbsp;&nbsp;From neon-lit skyscrapers, to historic temples, it has something for everyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;You can people watch until your head literally spins, feel like a real-life cartoon character, and even get Sapporo beer in vending machines throughout the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;Come along with me and let\u2019s explore Tokyo in just two days!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First up \u2013 where to stay?&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriott.com\/hotels\/travel\/tyocy-courtyard-tokyo-ginza-hotel\/?scid=bb1a189a-fec3-4d19-a255-54ba596febe2\">Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Ginza<\/a>&nbsp;is a 5 minute walk to the subway station, essential for getting around the city, and a 10-minute walk to the Tsukiji Fish Market.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since you are almost there, start with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsukiji.or.jp\/english\/\">Tsukiji Fish Market<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The activity starts early, so you will definitely want to visit early in the morning to get a glimpse of the action at this market.&nbsp;&nbsp;Enjoy wandering through the narrow alleys exploring all the shops.  It is a unique experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make your way to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.senso-ji.jp\/\">Sensoji Temple<\/a>, the oldest temple in the city.  Of course, grab your picture with the five-story pagoda.\u00a0\u00a0You will feel like you have left the ultra-modern part of the city, having entered traditional Tokyo here.  After exploring the temple, make your way to the Nakamise shopping street which connects the temple, the Kaminarimon gate and the main hall.  It is lined with souvenir shops and food stalls.\u00a0\u00a0Besides grabbing traditional souvenirs such as folding fans, this is the perfect location to try some local snacks.\u00a0\u00a0I recommend grabbing an affordably-priced seafood bowl sourced locally from the market and finishing with Ningyo Yaki, a sweet cake filled with red bean paste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nicholas-doherty-l81guxmkohw-unsplash-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1884\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nicholas-doherty-l81guxmkohw-unsplash-1.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nicholas-doherty-l81guxmkohw-unsplash-1-300x200.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nicholas-doherty-l81guxmkohw-unsplash-1-768x512.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nicholas-doherty-l81guxmkohw-unsplash-1-665x444.jpg 665w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nicholas-doherty-l81guxmkohw-unsplash-1-390x260.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Make your way to Akihabara, the buzzing shopping hub for all electronic goods or your next character collection if that is your jam.&nbsp;&nbsp;Department stores to tiny stalls with toys, cards and collectibles galore.&nbsp;&nbsp;I recommend having an afternoon tea at one of the animal or maid caf\u00e9s as you will find quite a selection here.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sip and people watch for hours of endless entertainment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depart for Shibuya Crossing, my true \u2018welcome to Tokyo\u2019 moment.\u00a0\u00a0It is rumoured to be the busiest intersection in the world, upwards of 3000 people flood the intersection when traffic from 7 crossroads comes to a halt.\u00a0\u00a0Immerse yourself in the chaos or, if that seems overwhelming, you can still enjoy the atmosphere from Mag\u2019s Park, the rooftop of the Shibuya department store.\u00a0\u00a0This will still offer great photos with no need to interact with people.  This by far was the most overwhelming moment for me in this city.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/timo-volz-dgsql2j028e-unsplash-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1885\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/timo-volz-dgsql2j028e-unsplash-1.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/timo-volz-dgsql2j028e-unsplash-1-300x200.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/timo-volz-dgsql2j028e-unsplash-1-768x512.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/timo-volz-dgsql2j028e-unsplash-1-665x444.jpg 665w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/timo-volz-dgsql2j028e-unsplash-1-390x260.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to enjoy a little Paris romance on the busy streets in Tokyo?&nbsp;&nbsp;Venture toward the \u201cEiffel tower\u201d of Japan, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokyotower.co.jp\/\">Toyko Tower<\/a>, standing 333m high in the centre of Tokyo.  It offers a fantastic bird\u2019s eye view of the city that you will not want to miss.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finish your first day with the unique experience of visiting the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shinjuku-robot.com\/pc\/\">Robot Restaurant<\/a>&nbsp;in Shinjuku.&nbsp;&nbsp;The main attraction here is the entertainment, not the food!  Enjoy the bright lights, music, cabaret dancers and of course, robots!&nbsp;&nbsp;From here, while en-route back to the hotel it is definitely worth visiting one of the many karaoke bars where the trend originated and belt out a few tunes!  A few Sapporo&#8217;s deep and you will be joining in with the locals singing all your favourite hits!  Or maybe that was just me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling rested and ready for another day of adventure?\u00a0\u00a0Head to the Mitaka District to visit the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghibli-museum.jp\/\">Ghibli Museum<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s an animation studio which feels like a hidden secret located in the lush Inokashira Park.\u00a0\u00a0Welcome to the gateway into Ghibli\u2019s animated world where you can have fun embracing your inner child while exploring the beauty and wonder of art and animation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3103\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-665x443.jpg 665w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-390x260.jpg 390w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/andy-miller-OXCXJDwEchs-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I like to pair new world with old world charms, so next up is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcf.or.jp\/fukagawa\/\">Fukagawa Edo Museum<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It houses a whole life-sized town with shops, homes and the daily goods.\u00a0\u00a0It has been recreated down to the last detail highlighting the lifestyle of people from the Edo period (1603-1867).  This by far was my favourite museum in Tokyo and wasn&#8217;t over-crowded and offered lots of history and education.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3105\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-1024x768.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-300x225.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-768x576.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-665x499.jpg 665w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-347x260.jpg 347w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/P1010061-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, head to the Odaiba area passing the colorful Rainbow bridge toward the Venus Fort, the European-style mall.
