There is just something charming about this little town that sweeps me off my feet. Geared toward art lovers, set along the Avon River, with fabulous restaurants and Shakespearean plays – makes it a fine day trip.
Well known for the Stratford Festival, there is an array of performances including all things Shakespeare. If you are considering a play or performance, I recommend getting your tickets in advance and making this a weekend trip. Consider staying at the The Parlour, Stratford’s Vintage Inn. It’s a boutique hotel located downtown Stratford, which has kept the charm and historic character, but also offers the luxuries and amenities you would imagine from the Vintage Inns.
Just making it a day – then I suggest taking a stroll down the main streets and square wandering your way in and out of chic shops. Make your way to explore the Avon River wandering along the riverside trails. From May to October, you can find Art in the Park along the river discovering local and regional artists and their work. One of my favourite things to do is grab a spot on Tom Patterson Island and have a picnic or even just some snacks enjoying the tranquil river views.
Back into town, you will want to make time to check out the Rheo Thompson Candy Shop. The food network calls Stratford an “ideal destination for chocolate lovers”. With more than one chocolate shop in town, you will find delicious treats throughout town. My favourite is Rheo and you must indulge in their signature mint smoothie in milk or dark chocolate. A glossy shell containing the soft smoothie centre – fudge-like without being too sweet; just simply smooth. Looking for treats for family and friends – you will find uniquely hand-wrapped gifts filled with chocolate, but also a work of art. Always a simple go-to Christmas gift for friends and family.
In town, you will find a couple of local breweries – I recommend Black Swan, located right off the main square. It’s a small venue, but worth exploring for a flight or signature pint. A little out of the downtown core, you will find JobSite Brewing – construction and carpentry-named beers and some great pizza to pair with your pint, making it a perfect lunch venue. You can easily walk to this location from downtown – it will make the pizza worth it.
Finally, we are talking dinner – I will give you two of my favourite options. The Red Rabbit conveniently located by the main square you will find this bistro featuring comfort food with a modern twist. A great option to consider if you are looking for dinner & theatre. The other choice is the Revival House, which is located in a refurbished church. With a selection of craft beers and an impressive wine list, you will have your farm-to-table experience with live music during the summer. Offering modern French cuisine with locally-inspired flavours, you will get a true taste of Ontario. A traditional fine-dining setting with rich tapestry, wood finishes, exposed brick, stained glass windows, and a theatrical chandelier, paired with live music, makes it a memorable evening out. Reservations recommended for both in advance.
