New Orleans – Where to Stay

March, 2019

Traditionally, the French Quarter tends to get all the love, but it’s actually better to stay slightly outside of this area especially, for a good night’s sleep.  There are plenty of options including Canal Street which borders the French Quarter, the Warehouse District or Business District.  Only a few minutes away by foot, or with a trolley, you can be in the heart of the madness in no time at all.

First let’s chat about getting to the downtown core from the airport.  Once you arrive at MSY, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, make your way toward ground transportation.  Grab a taxi as there is a set fee/flat rate of $36.00 USD from the airport to your hotel downtown, which will take approximately one hour depending on traffic.  Take this time and cost into consideration when planning your trip.

If you are considering Canal Street – the Champs d’Elysee and Fifth Avenue of NOLA – then I recommend the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. It offers views of the French Quarter and Mississippi River, a fully equipped fitness facility and rooftop pool.  The perfect location to be close enough to the action, but still quiet enough to relax.  Upgrade to the Club Lounge for breakfast and snacks throughout the day.

In 2019, I was in NOLA presenting for an Ergonomics conference which was situated in the business district at the The Hyatt.  It was actually a perfect location – walking distance to the Warehouse District and French Quarter, close to a local market and had a Trolley stop just outside the door.  We opted to stay at the Hyatt House which is attached to The Hyatt, for a more economical choice with a breakfast included each morning.

I adore the Warehouse District which is also referred to as the Art District.  Located near Canal Street along the Riverwalk of the Mississippi River, you will find converted brick warehouses housing galleries, museums, restaurants, hotels, and boutiques.  The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery is a boutique hotel in this area and worth considering.  The perfect mix of exposed brick and modern amenities.  If you are preferring to avoid a hotel, then I suggest securing an AirBnB in this district.
