NOLA – Foodies Guide and Much More

March, 2019

The fondest memories are made gathering around a table, so when you come to New Orleans, come hungry. This city is one of the most legendary places to eat in the world.  I have summarized some of my ultimate favourite spots in The Big Easy and even included a few venues beyond food.  Most spots require reservations in advance.

WHERE TO EAT

Chophouse New Orleans – An old-school steak house, with attention to detail, live entertainment, and a chic atmosphere.  Close to Canal Street, a traditional steak house with 28-day-aged streaks, a seafood platter that has it all, and a gigantic chocolate cake!  We may have ordered the cake for my 40th birthday – each took a small piece and then shared it with the table of 6 behind us!  Where there is food, there will be memories!

Mr. B’s Bistro – Creole cuisine in the heart of the French Quarter with a casual bistro vibe, vibrant Louisiana style food combined with that southern hospitality. Hot Tip, don’t forget to leave room for their hot buttered pecan pie! It’s an explosion of sweetness and is best paired with some richly aged Port.

Antoine’s – Established in 1840, this is country’s oldest family-run restaurant!  Here you have French-Creole inspired cuisine that makes for a delectable dinner in a charming setting in the heart of the French Quarter and Bourbon Street.  What’s not to love about Parisian inspired food with a southern kick?  Make sure to leave room for the crème brulee.  Looking for something midday instead – check out their impressive jazz brunch! We were lucky enough to have a 3 piece jazz ensemble serenade us during dinner one night.

Muriel’s – In the heart of my favourite area, Jackson Square, indulge in the finest Creole cuisine surrounded by an metaphysical ambiance.  Perhaps you will feel the energy of the lost souls while dining with a table of bread and wine specifically reserved for Mr. Jourdan.  I recommend splurging on the Table D’Hote Menu, with the recommended wine pairings you won’t regret it.  I personally recommend the double-cut pork chop.

WHERE TO DRINK

LaFitte’s Blacksmith Shop – Built between 1722 and 1732, it is reputed to be the oldest structure used for a bar in the United States.  This is a piano bar like no other – order the local, Abita Beer Purple Haze and enjoy!

Bacchanal Wine – Welcome to NOLA’s backyard party!  Offering live jazz, 7 days a week from Gypsy, blues to traditional, where you can wine and dine in the courtyard.  With an impressive wine list, you will find the perfect wine to pair with their legendary cheese plates.

The Roosevelt New Orleans – With a couple of options for drinks & dining, there are plenty of choices for you to indulge and be entertained.  The Fountain Lounge offers options of small plates with extraordinary cocktail menu and live entertainment.  The Sazerac Bar offers signature cocktails and is where you can taste the world’s first mixed drink.

Cresent City Brewhouse – The only French Quarter Microbrewery, this is a perfect spot to sample the local craft beer.  Pair your beer with endless snacks and starters such as baked oysters three ways, baked brie, smoked fish dip or fried alligator.

WHERE TO BRUNCH

Court of the Two Sisters – Pass through the charming gates and you will find more than just a restaurant.  In the heart of the French Quarter you will discover traditional Cajun and creole cuisine paired with amazing Jazz here.

Café Beignet – Located on Royal Street in the French Quarter, you will find this little gem that not too many people know about.  Most people opt for the Instagram worthy Café Du Monde, but this place is quaint and even better, in my opinion, without the tourist lines.

Arnaud’s – Since 1918, this upscale restaurant has been featuring live Dixieland Jazz with authentic creole cuisine and is often referred to as the most beautiful dining room in all of New Orleans. Arnaud’s is worth a visit.

WHERE TO JAZZ

Fritz’s European Jazz Pub – Located on the far end of Bourbon Street, here you will find the oldest jazz club in New Orleans and likely my favourite.  An intimate venue space offering nightly live jazz.

Snug Harbour Jazz Bistro – One of my favourite streets, Frenchmen Street, you will find this bistro.  Offering two shows a night (8 and 10 p.m.) in a cabaret-style space, serving classic creole cuisine.

Bamboulas – Located in the heart of the Marigny, you will find this gem.  Offering live blues and jazz from the musicians of New Orleans and the finest southern Caribbean cuisine.  Come experience all the flavour this place has to offer!
